In this unit we have focused on just one strand in Scripture. Therefore we certainly have not gained a complete picture of what is significant for Catholic Social Teaching in the Bible – far from it. I noted on screen 1.3.1 that the twin CST module introduces a second important strand that also runs all the way through the Bible, the ‘just government strand’.
The identification of these strands is just one way of making accessible what is in Scripture. It is highly important that we don’t take just part of what is in the Bible as though it is the whole.
To conclude our study of Scripture as a source for CST in this unit, there is a short reading from the 2004 Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church. This is the first of several readings that will be set from this publication during the module.
The pages you will read are the first part of Chapter 1, which has the heading ‘God’s Plan of Love for Humanity’. Much in this reading will be familiar from what you have looked at in this unit. After referring first to the phenomenon of religious experience in all human cultures, it presents an outline of the narrative of the Bible – from the Exodus right through to the texts in the New Testament from which the Church learned that God is three-in-one.
You can see this reading as a summary of the whole unit.
