Here is a very brief outline of what is to come.
Unit 2 does three things. First, it outlines the historical background to the publication of Rerum Novarum, the founding document of modern CST. Second, it gives a fuller introduction to the main principles of CST (than that in 1.1.6). Third, it introduces a way of engaging with CST that can assist us to make sure we connect it with the practical realities of everyday life. The approach this third part of Unit 2 outlines will also be important for the first module assignment.
Units 3 to 6 examine in turn some of the main areas of human living in which one can see CST as presenting a prophetic voice and in which it should enable us to ‘live life to the full’. These are:
- ecological responsibility
- working life
- economics and business
- family life in society.
Unit 7 concentrates on a subject which will be introduced in Unit 2 and then will be referred to in Units 3-7. This is the principle of ‘human dignity’ and the corresponding understanding of people’s duties and rights.
Unit 8 will place all that has been covered in earlier units in the historical context of the development of CST over the past century. It will also go further than earlier units in asking you, not only to learn about CST, but to think critically about it. Developing the skill of evaluating material you study critically is important for writing assignments in any Higher Education course.

Before you move on to Unit 2, give some time to reviewing and discussing what Unit 1 has introduced – see the next page.
